An LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) is an electromechanical sensor that converts the rectilinear motion of an object into a corresponding electrical or voltage signal. LVDT sensors are used to measure displacements and they work on the principle of a transformer in applications such as aerospace, industrial, and others. An LVDT sensor operates on the principle of electromagnetic coupling between the primary and secondary coils that are wound out of phase with each other. LVDT sensors are being used in applications such as deep-sea oil drilling, owing to the lower cost of ownership and excellent performance.
